The one-year anniversary of Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 World Cup is approaching, and rights group Amnesty International is accusing the Gulf state of a “continuing failure” on workers’ rights. Qatar faced criticism over its human rights record and treatment of migrant workers during the tournament, despite dismantling the controversial “Kafala” sponsorship system that gave employers powerful rights over workers. Amnesty is urging Qatar and FIFA to remedy abuses faced by migrant workers and adequately protect them from exploitation, including maintaining the minimum wage and addressing wage theft. The International Labour Organization noted a decline in cases of employer retaliation against workers, but acknowledged that it remains an issue.
