AP Top 25: Dominance of Ranked Teams and Lack of Upsets

The time for upsets in college football has come and gone with little chaos and not much movement in the AP Top 25 for most of the season. For more than 14 years, the same eight teams held the top eight spots in the poll for five straight weeks. In the top 25, there are eight playoff contenders, with four unbeaten teams and four 11-1 teams. All but Ohio State will play in a conference championship game next week. The records of Top 25 teams are gaudier than usual this year. In 2020, the Top 25 teams heading into the championship weekend had 59 losses. In 2021, that number was 47. This year, the Top 25 has 40 combined losses after the completion of the 12-game regular season. Of those 40 losses, 24 have come against other teams that currently are ranked. The rankings for each except the Ohio State team are analyzed and adjusted. You can find news and updates about college football from Ralph D.
