Sweden’s 2030 Winter Olympics Bid Receives Government Support

Sweden’s government gave the Swedish Olympic Committee the green light to submit a complete application to host the Games, and is examining the conditions for providing the state guarantees required for the same.

Sweden’s government on Sunday lent its backing to the country’s bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, saying it was ready to begin the process of looking into state guarantees.

“The government is ready to proceed to the next phase and examine the conditions for providing the state guarantees required to host the 2030 Winter Games in Sweden,” it said in a statement.

It gave the Swedish Olympic Committee the green light to submit a complete application to host the Games.

Events would be held primarily in Stockholm as well as several central Swedish towns including Falun, Are and Ostersund.

Some events could also be held in nearby Latvia and Norway, Sweden’s sports minister Jakob Forssmed told news agency TT on Sunday.

On Tuesday, France officially launched a bid for the 2030 Games, spread over sites in the French Alps, while Switzerland has also announced it will be a candidate.

The International Olympic Committee is expected to announce its decision in 2024.

Stockholm hosted the Summer Games in 1912 but has never hosted a Winter Olympics despite numerous attempts over the years.
